I have been wanting to share my excitement for some time, but I understand that some people do not share my passion and therefore don't like to have dog stuff shoved down their throats. I am often tagged in sad pictures or sad circumstances on facebook and I am not going to lie and say those posts don't rip at my heart. Of course they do! However I want to try to keep my page positive and optimistic. That is why I am writing this...so those that might be interested, could read it, and those that aren't interested, don't have to! Here goes...
One of the most positive things I have done in awhile is fostering and assisting in the training of soon to be Service Dog Extraordinaire, Tillman. Tillman and I have known each other for awhile now. The shelter I volunteer at, Paws Ranch, agreed to my desperate requests to save Tillman from the Universal City Animal Shelter. He was saved from being euthanized several times and was just about on his last chance. Tillman (then known as Jake) was a black dog, and apparently black dogs are overlooked. Tillman also wasn't one of those "in your face" dogs either. He sat calmly in his crate or kennel and didn't run to the door eagerly when people stopped to look at him and wasn't a big barker. At adoption events, we would make eye contact and we sort of had this unspoken understanding between us. He knew his opportunity would come, so he wasn't worried. I knew his opportunity would come, but I hated that so many months had gone by and he was still waiting. You see, Tillman's eyes also told me something else. While they said "I don't mind waiting" they also said "I have a much bigger job to do than to be a house pet". I could see this. How could I help him though?
Around this time, Kory and I were in the middle of getting 2 of our dogs certified as Therapy Dogs. Sure enough, Penny's From Heaven Foundation just happened to also have a program that trained shelter dogs to be service dogs for veterans. Train A Dog~Save A Warrior (TADSAW) was only about 8 months up and running but the point was...it was up and running! I was able to meet with one of the trainers, who happened to have a spot available! I showed her all of the pictures and videos of Tillman and she was very interested. Unfortunately, she soon had to leave TADSAW for medical reasons. I was devastated that this meant Tillman would be at the shelter for another 6 months or so. A few weeks passed and a few more adoption events went by with no promising leads. By now, we had graduated from the Therapy Dog program and I had taken on the position of Special Events Coordinator. We had a meeting at which the TADSAW trainer, Michelle, was present. It killed me to hear of other dogs getting accepted into the program, so I built up the nerve to mention Tillman, and the fact that they HAD wanted to see him at one point. By this time, Tillman was suffering from "shelter stress" and he needed out ASAP. He was losing hair and weight and it was KILLING ME. Michelle was more than happy to evaluate Tillman, but we had absolutley no place to put him. I reached out for a foster but had no luck. I knew what an amazing guy Tillman was, but I was having trouble getting someone else to take the chance on a shelter dog that had more than likely never lived with an actual family before. (SIDE NOTE: While at Paws Ranch, he did live with an awesome foster family, but soon got bored being a "pet" and would jump their fence). I was pregnant and had 3 dogs already, one of which isn't nice to anybody, and a backyard with a terrible fence that wouldn't keep any dog confined. What was I going to do? I had to get Tillman accepted into the program first. What if he didn't pass? I figured I would stop worrying about finding him a foster home and work on getting him accepted first.
It was a Wednesday, July 13, 2011 to be exact. A hot, dry, sunny summer day and TADSAW trainer Michelle, my therapy dog Gainer, and I headed out to the San Antonio Animal Control facility to speak to a group of kids about animals with careers. Tillman was going to be evaluated THAT afternoon. I didn't sleep at all the night before. I was so nervous for Tillman. I asked Michelle if there was anything we could do to prepare him and all she would tell me was that Tillman would speak for himself. I knew Tillman could speak to me, but could he speak to others too?
Of course he could! As a matter of fact, one of Tillman's buddies at the shelter, Boomer, could talk to others too! We left Paws Ranch that day with Tillman and the promise to return by the end of the week to pick up Boomer. A kind neighbor (a black dog lover) agreed to watch Tillman for the afternoon until we could properly introduce Tillman to our other dogs. Every foster lead had fallen through at this point, so I convinced my husband that Tillman had to stay with us until we could find him a foster family. We got him a nice roomy crate and piled it full of pillows and blankets. It sat in the living room, right next to Titan's dog bed.
We had NO idea that Titan and Tillman would become the BEST of friends. Those two play together constantly. Titan would even try to sleep in the crate with Tillman at night. Tillman turned out to be just what Titan needed. The other 2 dogs in the house, Ripley and Gainer, were old and never wanted to play, just sleep. Kory and I joked about how we were going to tell Titan that he couldn't keep Tillman! It turns out Tillman LOVES men. He LIKES everyone, but he LOVES men. Once we were confident that the dogs weren't going to kill each other, we packed up the crate and let Tillman have free range in the house. Free range of the house soon turned into free range of Kory's side of the bed. Like I said, he LOVES men and prefers to sleep curled up or completely under the covers right next to Kory. Tillman will not move, not even an inch, once he is on the bed.
This past week Tillman and I started Service Dog classes. He did really well. Turns out he LOVES hot dogs and will do anything for a hot dog. He hates fruit. Why am I telling you all this? I want to keep some sort of record, possibly for Tillman's future soldier and possibly for me, about all of these things. While I love Tillman so much, I do know that there is another plan for him. He has a much bigger job to do. I knew it all along. You know so many times we wonder where our life is headed or why certain obstacles or opportunities arise when they do. I went into this not knowing why but knowing it just seemed so right. I am right where I am supposed to be and so is Tillman. God puts opportunites in front of us all the time. I (as well as my husband and many of those close to me) have wondered if this was really a good idea, being pregnant and taking on the responsibility of fostering and training a service dog. Tillman won't be in training forever and the day will soon come where he is ready to start that bigger job. How will I hold up? I can tell you that right now I think I will be just fine. As Tillman starts his new life, I will be giving birth and starting a new life too. As Tillman leaves my nest, I will have my own baby to raise.
So, to Tillman's future soldier, even though the 2 of you haven't even met yet, Tillman has been preparing his whole life for you. He has known, prepared, and worked hard to get ready to meet you. He has known you would come for him and he was never worried. You might be questioning your situation and why you have to encounter the obstacles you do, but let me tell you this. It is all part of a plan that we might never understand. Why couldn't you and Tillman meet earlier? The timing just wasn't right. But when it is, it will seem like the two of you have known each other all your lives.

?
So, after anticipating finding out the gender of the baby, it turns out there was a "booking error" at the doctor's office and a doctor who started Monday was assigned to us and she wasn't comfortable reading ultrasounds. She felt terrible for us (and our 5 guests that tagged along for the big reveal) so gave us lots of pictures but couldn't see one way or the other what the baby's gender was. She was able to get us in for Wednesday morning, so we wait. And wait. And wait.

CONFIRMING WHAT MOST ALREADY KNOW...
It's official. We are expanding the family, and not with another dog (although we have temporarily...more on that later)! Due Dec 17, which was my Grandpa's birthday. Do the math, and I have a MADE IN MEXICO baby! Thank you to everyone who has manged to keep it off of my Facebook page! We find out the gender Aug. 4. No complications at all so far, no unusual cravings, and only one emotional breakdown and that was last night! I felt baby ove for the first time Monday night. I was headed to Alamo Cafe pretty late with my fried Nicole and I was calling to make sure the restaraunt was still open. Baby must like Alamo Cafe as much as Kory and I do!
The newest temporary addition to our four legged family is Tillman. Tillman is in the Train A Dog Save A Warrior Program through Penny's From Heaven Foundation. Tillman is in the process of being trained to be a service dog for a wounded soldier. I found out yesterday we have a waiting list for our service dogs that spans from Canada, across the US, all the way to Puerto Rico! Tensions were high in the Wilson house for a few days (Kory not happy about a 4th dog) but when Kory saw how much fun Tillman and Titan have playing, I sensed a little sadness when I told him last night that Tillman would be moving on to a new foster family soon. We are so excited to be a part of Tillman's training, something way bigger than any of us. Please check my Facebook for pictures and updates on this special guy. Check back here Aug 4 to find out what the baby is...

2010 San Antonio Pet Expo
I had been looking forward to the first annual San Antonio Pet Expo for WEEKS! I had volunteered with 2 rescue groups to help out. There was a fantastic turnout! Over 11,000 people came with their pets and over 100 pets were adopted into forever homes! They had Agility Dog Demonstrations (like at half-times at the Spurs games), Search and Rescue Demonstrations, Police K-9 Working Dog Demonstrations, etc. It was a blast. And it was completely free and air conditioned. Here is a picture of my friend Pittie. Pittie has a sad story but it will soon have a happy ending, so I won't bring you down with the sad details. Just know she is 100% healthy and lookin for a home. I sponsored part of her recovery and the pet expo was the first time we met in person. I had tears in my eyes because I was so proud and amazed at how far she had come.
Pittie also has a little friend named Sammy. Sammy is currently undergoing heartworm treatment and will be looking for a new home sometime in September. This picture was taken about 6 hours into the Expo and Sammy was exhausted. He sure is a handsome boy that will change someone's life for the better very soon. I just know it!
She is such a little lady. Seeing how much my little donation was able to help has really changed my perspective and outlook on a lot of things. I was going to go to Target the other day for a new top, but then I remembered how far that money could go towards helping a sick homeless dog or even a dog with a home but whose owner's have fallen on hard times.

We'll Take It!
This was the first shot of the day. People actually asked if we were a couple, because they said we had great chemistry! Notice we are in pajamas!
Someone else asked if I had a "BumpIt" in! Answer: NO!
While waiting for the crew to adjust lighting and camera angles, I got to relax in a big comfy bed, with nice 400 count sheets from the local WalMart!
.
We had a minor script change, which reseluted in Kory having to be a really good sport and play 2 parts and undergo serious hair and make-up changes!
What a good sport! Below are a couple of videos taken from behind the scenes!
And below is a sneak peak at one scene. As you can see, we both were "made-under".
As I mentioned previously, the commercial will air in Austin, Kerrville, Boerne, & Fredericksburg (the Hill Country).

Three Can Be A Crowd...
Besides work, the only excitement Kory and I really have in our lives is our dogs! We both work long hours and to keep feelings of guilt away, we take our dogs to Camp Bow Wow a couple times a week. They play all day with lots of other dogs and sleep all afternoon and all night. As an added bonus, we can log in from our computers and watch what they are doing. There is also an iPhone app that I downloaded that lets me see them when I can't get to a computer. Titan has just recently reached the age to where he can go too. At first, the counselors said he stayed to himself and didn't socialize much (which broke our hearts). He has gotten much better and is a complete wild man and socialite while he is there. Here is a picture of everyone on the way to camp one morning:
Ripley is a bit possesive of the back area and feels three can be too much of a crowd, so this is usually how it ends up, with Titan in the backseat:
He is a good sport and dowsn't let her bullying get him down! He is getting HUGE! As a reminder, this was him in February:
He is so sweet and affectionate. Very much a people person. He loves to play with Ripley (when she allows it) and he is constantly jumping on Gainer. We are really enjoying seeing how much he changes each day. His markings are really coming out now and he has a cute cowlick on his back that sticks straight up! I am not used to having a boy dog and Kory just wishes he would lift his leg....

Lobster Night

My Dad invited Kory, my brother and I to join he and my Mom at The Grill at Leon Springs for Lobster Fest. As an added benefit, Tuesdays happen to be half price wine night! We had a great time catching up with my brother and hearing his latest State Trooper stories. (If you ever happen to be somewhere with my brother, sit next to him because he has some crazy stories to tell!) We never get the opportunity to spend much time together as a family, so this was nice. We celebrated Father's Day on Saturday rather than Sunday, due to scheduling conflicts. My Mom made homemade ice cream, which always brings back such happy memories from my childhood. I remember the anticipation of waiting for the ice cream to get cold enough to eat. We would sit in the backyard and watch the ice cream maker spin for what seemed like forever! We also had all 8 dogs out at my parents: Tucker (yellow lab), Angus (blk lab), Bracco (blk lab), Charlie (chocolate lab), Floyd (boxer), Gainer (black lab), Ripley (mix), and Titan (German Shepherd puppy). So much fun and such great weather!
